Baltic Place

In September 2006 work commenced on the installation of 11.0m to 18.0m long piles to form the steel intensive basement car park of Carillions new office development on the banks of the River Tyne.

Due to the ground conditions on site, we had to pre-auger the pile line prior to the installation of the piles. The piles were then driven to refusal using our ABI leader rig and impact driven to our designed toe level using a CX85 hydraulic impact hammer. The final stage of the contract was to weld the clutches of the piles to form the watertight seal required for the basement.

The main contractors construction sequence changed during our installation and concerns were raised as to the stability of the wall because of this. Therefore we had to obtain independent design checks on our calculations taking into account the new loadings on the wall.

The contract was finished on schedule and to the satisfaction of Carillion.
