VolkerGround Engineering was employed by VolkerFitzpatrick to install a combination of sheet piles and mini-piles to provide foundations and a retaining wall for the Tunelling and Underground Construction Facility project and Back Up Control Facility.
The works were completed using a Klemm 709 rig and a 35-tonne Movax pile driver.
VolkerGround Engineering installed bearing piles with a cut-off level above the platform. In order to do this concrete was cast from above the platform level using a formwork solution.
Working under the A406 and adjacent to live services caused logistical issues for the team. VolkerGround Engineering ensured the working height of the used plant was minimalised throughout the build to eliminate the risks of working in a tight space.
Commenting on the work at Ilford, Project Manager Carl Axford said:
“VolkerGround Engineering’s commitment and performance was exceptional. Concise daily communication and excellent levels of supervision assisted in delivering a potentially problematic scope, ahead of the programme with minimal impact on the remaining site.”
