VolkerGround Engineering was employed by VolkerFitzpatrick to install a combination of sheet piles and mini-piles, to provide foundations and a retaining wall for the Tunelling and Underground Construction Facility project and Back Up Control Facility.
Using a 35tonne Movax pile driver, the team installed temporary sheet piles to create a platform for the Klemm 709 rig, which was used to install the bearing piles. VolkerGround Engineering used a formwork solution to cast the concrete above the platform level.
Working under the A406 and adjacent to live services caused logistical issues for the team. VolkerGround Engineering used low headroom rigs to eliminate the risks of working in a tight space with height restrictions, enabling the works to flow smoothly.
Commenting on the work at Ilford, Project Manager Carl Axford said:
“VolkerGround Engineering’s commitment and performance was exceptional. Concise daily communication and excellent levels of supervision assisted in delivering a potentially problematic scope, ahead of the programme with minimal impact on the remaining site.”
