Royal Albert Dock

VolkerGround Engineering was awarded a £120,000 contract by Mitchellson Formwork and Civil Engineering Ltd, to undertake sheet piling works on their Royal Albert Dock project; part of the wider Royal Albert Dock development.

Using an ABI TM 13/16 piling rig, VolkerGround Engineering constructed a 23m x 12m x 7m deep cofferdam comprising 58no. AZ17 sheet piles, up to 10 metres long.

The team also installed a temporary frame, prefabricated by VolkerBrooks, to limit the deflections of the sheet piles and to enable the main contractor to excavate for the deep pile cap. The use of the prefabricated frame enabled programme savings for the installation of the temporary frame.

In the pre-construction phase, VolkerGround Engineering established a good working relationship with the client. The teams worked together to design the most economical piling solution that suited their platform levels and working sequence. This relationship between the site teams continued throughout the project.
