Driven Sheet Piles

VolkerGround Engineering is able to offer its clients a range of driven piling solutions to suit most site ground conditions where driven piles are the most economic foundation scheme.

Driving sheet piles in a confined urban situation can be problematic; but the business has installation techniques to cover all eventualities using high frequency vibratory Movax hammers mounted on excavators with long reach facilities, integrated leader rigs, or vibratory hammers mounted on ABI hydraulic leader rigs.

The advantage of driven sheet piling over bored cast in situ is that it is able to accommodate a wide range of differing soil conditions. With a driven steel pile the cross sectional area of the structural member is less than that for a square concrete pre cast pile, and can be driven in variable soil conditions. Wastage is also less with steel driven piles in that any surplus materials resulting from early penetration refusal can be cut off, welded onto another section and re used; providing a more sustainable solution. In addition to utilisation of our modern plant fleet VolkerGround Engineering are able to provide bespoke solutions to specific site conditions using conventional piling gates and frames that we are able to manufacture at VolkerBrooks, Morecambe within their in house fabrication facilities.

Tubular steel bearing piles is an alternative form of driven steel bearing piles offered by VolkerGround Engineering. On a recent project for the gate structure on the Ipswich Tidal Barrier, in the River Orwell in Suffolk, sheet piles were driven 56m into structure less chalk formation. The maximum pile length handled was 31m, with the full length achieved through in situ welding before driving to final toe level. Value engineering savings were achieved through the installation of a test pile ahead of the main works.
