Lincolnshire Lakes

Scunthorpe

Lincolnshire Lakes is a strategic regeneration development in Scunthorpe which will include the development of 7,739 new homes and recreational facilities.

To enable this development, and to protect the existing private residences and commercial properties in the area from flooding, VolkerGround Engineering was awarded a £6.7m contract by VBA to install 3,373 linear metres of sheet piles.

Works included strengthening a 3.8km section of flood protection earth embankments along the River Trent, through the village of Burringham to Keadby Bridge, on the A18.

The team installed a sheet piled wall along the 3.8km section of embankment. A variety of piling techniques were used including the use of leader rigs, a MOVAX and a pile press.

The VolkerGround Engineering team also used an ABI 16/20 rig to install 15 metre long piles adjacent to the high street in Burringham, as well as an ABI 13/16 rig, with winch removed, to allow sheet pile installation under the Northern Powergrid Overhead lines.

Due to the close proximity of the new sheet-pile wall to residences and buildings, noise and vibration monitoring was undertaken at pre-determined points along the boundary.

VolkerGround Engineering also minimised disruption by using a low vibration silent piling technique and attenuation blankets to mitigate noise.

The project scored an exceptional score of 42/50 in its final Considerate Constructors Scheme audit – well above the industry average.
